Alief Community Garden
Recently on a 17 mile streets run through the Alief neighborhood of Houston I stumbled on the Alief Community Garden. I took a break from my run to walk the grounds, smell some flowers and talk with a couple of the volunteers who were busy at work tending to the plants. Special shout out to Marilyn who refilled my water bottle twice from her hose while watering plants in the garden. It was a beautiful place with an abundance of flowers and vegetables.
The Alief Community Garden was created in 2011 by the International Management District in partnership with the Alief Super Neighborhood Council. The land is leased from the Alief Independent School District. In September 2011, the community built 30 raised beds. As of March, 2021 there are 85 beds. Plot size is 4' x 20' and rent for $5/month. For availability, please email bquattro@sbcglobal.net. Gardners pay $5 a month for plot rentals. They are required to contribute 15 hours per year per plot to help maintain the garden area.
